Administration and
Bug Tracking Database

A Microsoft Access Prototype

The Administration Database Prototype

What It Does

The Administration and Bug Tracking Database has two primary functions. The first function is that it stores some very basic information about your agency. This information is used in many of the other databases, especially when creating forms and reports. For instance the agency logo is used in the Departmental database splash screen, as well as on various reports. This section was added as we were cleaning up the database for release. The information was hard-coded in the original database, as at the time we did not envision the programs being widely released and used by various agencies.

The second component is the Bug Reporting System. This system allowed me to receive bug reports from the users of the system. On each database form there is a small button with a picture of a bug on it. By clicking on the bug, the user could send me a report indicating what had happened. The form the user was in would be automatically entered into the bug tracking database.

In addition to receiving bug reports, we were also able to send out information to the users concerning any updates or messages. This was done through the Update Information form. Here we could target specific projects that would receive the update messages. On the user's Switchboard screen, there was a button with a bell. Clicking on the bell allowed you to view the latest messages.

In many ways it was/is a primitive system, however it worked pretty well in practice. The users appreciated the fact that if they had a problem they could report it without having to start a new program or send an e-mail. It was workable for me, as it kept all of the bug reports and resolutions in one single place.
